Yalari Travels With Greyhound

Orientation Camp fun with Yalari!

Greyhound was so pleased to be able to join the Yalari scholars in their 9th annual Orientation Camp on the Gold Coast last week. Sixty five Indigenous children from regional, rural and remote communities came together last week to learn about boarding school life, make new friends and to equip themselves with the skills they will need for their scholarship adventure ahead.

The secondary school aged children have all been chosen to be apart of the Yalari Organisations secondary school scholarship programme. With a thorough selection process which includes practical testing and in depth interviews, the children have all been awarded secondary school scholarships to attend various boarding schools around Australia.

The annual Orientation Camp is designed to prepare the children for being away from their homes and to give them a taste of what boarding school life is like. Some children may have never been away from their families and communities before, making this Orientation Camp experience even more essential.

The itinerary was jam packed for this exciting and educational week including exciting outings that included:

  • Visting Metricon Stadium to visit the Gold Coast Suns including a workshop with the players
  • Visiting Surfers Paradise on a Greyhound coach to sightsee
  • Heading up to the Sky Point Observation Deck which is on the 77th floor of the Q1!
  • Trying their hand at orienteering in a fun-filled 'Race around the Gold Coast' adventure
  • Participating in workshops to learn about cyber safety, health, relationships and how to hip-hop (not necessarily in that order!) &
  • Jumping back on a Greyhound coach for a day at Dreamworld and Whitewater World!

Although the week wasn't without the odd home sickness tear, the students left pumped and prepared to tackle boarding school life.

Greyhound was so excited to be made apart of this essential Orientation Camp week and feel honoured to be able to provide support to the Yalari Organisation and their students.
