HOW TO GET AROUND MELBOURNE

Your Greyhound bus to Melbourne will drop you at Southern Cross Station Coach Terminal, the city’s transport hub.

From there, you’ll discover just how easy, convenient and inexpensive it is to get around in Melbourne. There’s a reason Melbourne is often ranked as one of the most liveable cities in the world! Melbourne’s straightforward grid layout makes it easy to find your way around, and most major attractions are within walking distance of each other in the city centre.

Of course, there’s plenty to do outside the city, too – make sure you catch a tram to St Kilda, where you can take a stroll on the beach, ride Australia’s oldest rollercoaster at the iconic Luna Park, and spot adorable penguins waddling back to their nests after dark!

To use public transport in Melbourne, you’ll need to purchase a Myki card – paper tickets are obsolete in this city. Myki is a smart card that can be purchased or topped up at train stations and selected retail outlets, including most convenience stores. With a Myki, you can travel on Melbourne’s trams, buses and trains.

To get the true Melbourne experience, it’s best to explore the city and inner suburbs on the city’s famous tram network. Travel within the city centre by tram is free, though you will need to swipe on and off with your Myki card if you plan to start or finish your journey outside of the CBD.

Newcomers to Melbourne can familiarise themselves with the place by hopping on the City Circle tram, which loops the city centre every 12 minutes in both directions. The trams used for this circuit – which takes about 48 minutes to complete – are vintage restored trams, recognisable by their maroon-and-gold colour schemes. The City Circle tram stops at many of the tourist hotspots around the city, and comes with historical commentary as you travel.

Melbourne’s trains also offer a convenient way to explore the city, with five stations on the city loop in the CBD – Southern Cross Station, Flagstaff, Melbourne Central, Parliament and Flinders Street.

The bus network fills in any gaps left by the trams and trains, and runs to virtually all major attractions, shopping centres, schools, hospitals and sports stadiums in Melbourne.

Cycling is also a popular way to get around Melbourne, with numerous bike paths.
