Darwin to Jabiru
DARWIN TO JABIRU BUS
See the natural wonders of the Northern Territory when you travel from Darwin to Jabiru, in the heart of Kakadu, on a Greyhound bus!
Your journey begins in tropical Darwin. The Northern Territory’s capital city is your gateway to the nearby Litchfield National Park, where you can swim in sparkling water holes under cascading waterfalls set amidst monsoon rainforest. Litchfield is also the place to see the amazing Magnetic and Cathedral termite mounds, and learn more about how these tiny creatures are able to build such impressive structures.
Almost four hours away from Darwin on a Greyhound bus lies Jabiru, the main township in the World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park, and the perfect base from which to explore this one-of-a-kind nature reserve (along the way to Jabiru, the bus will also stop at the Aurora Kakadu Resort and Aurora Kakadu Lodge).
Covering nearly 20,000 square kilometres (7,722 square miles), this biodiverse nature reserve is home to more than 2,000 plant species, around one-third of all Australian bird species and roughly one-fifth of all Australian mammals, with terrain ranging from sandstone escarpments to wetlands and rivers.
Not just a haven for wildlife, Kakadu is also of great cultural significance to Australia. Two of Australia’s most important Aboriginal rock art sites, Ubirr and Nourlangie, can be found here, serving as windows to a rich cultural tradition that dates back thousands of years. From the Nourlangie site, you can climb to the nearby Gunwarddehwardde Lookout for amazing views of Kakadu’s rugged escarpments.
Kakadu’s two major waterfalls, the 200m (656ft) tall Jim Jim Falls and 158m (518ft) tall Twin Falls, are must-see attractions for visitors, especially when they’re in full flow during the wet season between November and April. Gunlom Plunge Pool – a crystal-clear plunge pool on Waterfall Creek – offers sweeping views of the National Park, and has been hailed as one of Australia’s best-kept secrets.
If you’re on the lookout for crocodiles, head to Yellow Water, a landlocked billabong that plays host to crocs, buffaloes, wild horses and more. You can see the animals from aboard a Yellow Water Cruise, or while strolling along the boardwalks on the water’s edge.
